A brief scene with Halloa

In a candle-lit room in DoctorWintertop's YendelKirk? retreat, HalloaGrisau stared into a net braced inside a pyramid frame, leaning forward and stroking xir chin thoughtfully. Across from Halloa xir eldest child, Karyan, hooked xir general onto the precipice point with considered care.

"Ah, you may be four moves from beating your old cennend."

"Three." Karyan rose and observed the board from another angle.

"No, certainly four." Halloa seemed to sink obstinately into xir seat as xir jaw set in challenge.

Before the two could fortify their argument with details and accusations, the sound of splintering wood interrupted them. There was shouting and stamping of feet, and the shush and rhythm of tentacles on a wooden floor.

A harsh, feminine voice shouted "Bring out the doctor!"

Halloa and Karyan couldn't make out the stammered reply from whatever unfortunate page had been in the hallway. Halloa was not fluent in lander speech, but the message was clear, and xie knew the doctor was in town consulting with an alchymist.

More utterances, then doors started to bang open. Halloa stood up. Ele was upstairs translating books. Karyan stood as well, and startled when the door to their room swung in. A hard-faced Selkie sized them up, motioned them out with a blade. "Come here. You're gonna help us wait for our appointment."

DeritriaEleven and her crew gathered every person in the household into the large medical gallery with efficiency and speed. She watched half the room fill with servants, when she had a glance to spare from the central table. On it, a bleeding selkie frothed and moaned, the blazing pattern of a poisoned tentacle plain to see. Deritria's own limbs coiled and looped with tension, murder in her eyes. "Where is our runner?"

"Your patient won't last but ten more minutes. I'm an apprentice, give me a chance." Karyan stood, trying to take on a kind of authority from the room itself. Xie affected a masculine voice when speaking in lander tongues, and it grated on Halloa to no end.

Deritria and one of her armed companions shared a look. "Doctor Wintertop has some click-faced Phoecenni for an apprentice? Is that what you are?" Her eyes narrowed. "Prove it. But I don't enjoy being failed or lied to.."

As Karyan washed xir hands and started to gather reagents, Halloa stood with a grunt, and sighed out a series of clicks and tones. A sword was held to the elder Grisau to keep xir from moving further.

Still kneeling on the floor, Ele piped up quickly "Ha-Halloa requests a wager - xie bets xir life on a success!" It was a reflex, really.

"Then I'll wager a quiet exit." Deritria folded her arms and waited.

As Karyan's expression calmed and xie quickly and methodically got to work, Halloa felt certain xie'd bet on a sure thing.
