Like all phytoplankton, these tiny lifeforms operate on a 'bloom and bust' cycle. When blooming, they will organize themselves haphazardly into stripes of black and white flotsam. The Bluefins tell us the waters are unsafe and cause a terrible gill rot, but I have yet to find a doctor who has treated a victim of it.

There has not even been a HaruspicineAlchemy done on this "menace." VarixArchebelloch was seeking KingProteus 's support to steal a sample of the waters before xir retirement.

Commentary, footnotes, disputes, refutations, addenda:

The Shark (DeritriaEleven) insists that the local alchymists have historically used the husks of recently bloomed specimens as a sort of veracity-inducing soparific on other citizens belonging to the Myriapodia people. I haven't seen it for myself, though.

Veracity is going a little far in describing the effects of BlackAndWhiteLights on my people. It's more in the nature of in vino veritas, as the drylanders would have it.
