A Recollection:

I’ve been in the presence of PrinceXanthus once, although he wouldn't know me. I was in the middle of a pleasant interlude with JusticeEuphretes in our usual spot, the back cabin of the historic IronSabre that DuchessFiredrake keeps in the SingingTower. It was a secluded spot, with little attention from servants or passersby. But apparently we weren't the only ones to know that.

“I’m not sure what you expect me to do,” I heard the Duchess murmur. “I have no place on the CircleOfSix.”

If I craned my head just so, I could see their silhouettes without disrupting the valiant efforts of Ser Euphrates. The Duchess was in full regalia, which today featured a hat that towered over the diminutive LuftBaron.

“I think you do yourself a disservice, milady,” the Prince said. “My father thinks highly of your opinion, of a surety. And those of your … confederates.”

“You mean the peerage.”

“Come, Duchess. Must we play games? I’m referring of course to the UmberAlliance.”

Matilda scoffs. “That old yarn. I assure you, young Laberenz, that your father would not encourage you to spread such nonsense.”

What happened next I almost missed; pleasure running through me, an unintentional cry crushed between my lips.

“The LordKeeper is often at loggerheads with the LadyPrecedent, your Ladyship. I’m sure you don’t think that I have an unthorough appreciation of the nuance here. And the LordMilitant is unlikely to throw down his approval, since that will diminish his authority over the individual branches as well.”

“Let’s say that I might have an ear to put a word in, of whatever provenance,” the Duchess offers. “Why the SkyLevy? Why not the CrimsonCloud?”

Xanthus wore a wry expression. “I’m no fool, milady. The CrimsonCloud needs must be ruled by a warrior, and BaronStormwing is that man. My fellow LuftBaronKell? works well with Stormwing. The SkyLevy, on the other hand, requires a trainer and a leader, one who can rally the HighCourt’s citizens against any outside threat. And that is something that I can be. Let AvaKordite have her PalaceGuard. The LuftBaroness has no higher ambitions. But the SkyLevy, they are the key to maintaining MeridianBalance.”

There is silence where the Duchess says nothing, and then a curt laugh. “Sorry, I wasn’t sure if you were done with your little speech. When did you say you met with the Circle?”

“Day after next,” the Prince says somewhat stiffly.

The Duchess nods, makes a decision. “If the LadyPrecedent remarks on the possibility of adjusting the SkyKnights fiduciary earmarks you’ll know that there is a chance of it. That will be your moment. If she says nothing, hold your tongue.”

Prince Xanthus bows over the Duchess’s hand.

"I'll be in your debt."

She said something else in return, something about the GrandSummer proceedings and a favor she’d ask of him, but I didn’t notice, distracted by the ministrations of sweet Justice.
