Xie has designated one of xir young ones as xir prinxe, and xir star ascends to the dismay of NasheFitzagua. Nashe was well-liked before xir disappearance and considered to be unjustly deposed for political reasons due to xir affiliation with PhoqueVin. If my dalliance with Varix had been after young Nashe's absence I would have been hard-pressed not to argue xir case.
In any case, Varix's role in the ATC has subsided, and will likely sunset completely as soon as xir prinxe has found xir footing.

The old Potentate has seen and done much, but I wonder how interested in retirement for retirement's sake xie really is. As it has been xir entire life, I suspect retirement is just another move to serve xir ambitions, whatever they may ultimately be.
Even allowing Nashe to gain in popularity and become the heir to the company in the public eye (no matter how it may have stung the beautiful Teovon Archebelloch, xir epox) may have been a plan of Varix's. That NasheFitzagua grew into a fine intellect as well as a daring person is only further to Varix's benefit if one considers xir option of declaring Nashe xir own..either for the company's sake or for an eventual DeepCourt appointment.
'Very good', people might say, 'Nashe is finally getting xir due, don't you think?' and it would all fit rather neatly.
Well, that is just speculation. Outside of that, the young prinxe has been somewhat removed from noble society, plying the ATC's ships and learning the business first hand. After the prinxe's first cotillion and the dismaying things that happened, I suppose it's understandable that Varix would isolate xir somewhat.
