Front Page DeepCourt

I visited the DeepCourt early in my term as assistant scribe. My senior having failed to comfortably assimilate the WaterBreathingAdaptation or find an alternative, I carried on as part of a trading mission. With a stylus and stacks of wax pads, I endeavoured to carry on.

It's a wonderful place, the DeepCourt. Mother of pearl, nacre, gleaming polished coral, gardens of raked white sand and shells. It's run by a triumvirate, or well, troika perhaps, as two of them are Queens.

I had a short audience before the Court, with QueenMyriada of the Mer presiding, trident in hand. Her tail is beautiful, its scales glittering in green and gold, and her golden hair floats in unbound waves. I understand sometimes she uses a gaff as a scepter, perhaps when she is sitting in judgment. In the shadows behind her, perched in a niche in the wall, was QueenHydra of the Myriapoda. QueenHydra watched Court silently, her dark torso seated in a nest of tentacles, her loose black hair shorter, showing silvery shimmers as she looked one way then another. From time to time, she would reach out with a tentacle and touch QueenMyriada, communicating silently.

KingProteus of the Selkies was absent, as I understand he usually is, preferring to travel the length and breadth of his domains, and spend much time basking upon the beaches and rocks, and living amongst his subjects. He attends Court for ceremonial occasions and at need.

Comments, extensions, footnotes, rebuttals, etc.

Our most powerful families represent us to the DeepCourt, and accept minor titles for the responsibility. QueenMyriada rules that the shallows away from HighCourt territory are for the Selkie, barring minor exceptions, and the shores near HighCourt cities belong to humans. Only our home coast is truly ours, everywhere else we are tenants.

Shall we ever take a prominent place in the DeepCourt? Will we have to take on more lander affectations to do it, to split Phoecenni progeny into inheritors and non-inheritors, trading the 'lesser' about like the HighCourt does with its 'daughters'? Fie!

Well, that is an inappropriate bitterness, for KingProteus speaks for us when we need it, and QueenHydra is popular among us for her thoughtfulness and reliability. QueenMyriada has the patience and indifference of an ocean.

Pardon, are you making our king to be a layabout? Sorry dear but nothing could be further form the truth. Our king is always busy, always active. At what? I'm not at liberty to say. Just know he is the wisest soul alive.

Most of what I know about the Deep Court is via the Shark, dear DeritriaEleven. The main point that she tried to impress upon me was that despite the nominal power of the Troika, the other main power is the ArchebellochTradingCompany and its head, VarixArchebelloch. Don't be swayed by Grisau's insistence that the Phoecenni simply rely on the magnanimous greatness of the three crowned rulers. Who runs the trade routes, ferries diplomats and brings dryland correspondence? The ATC, the ATC, the ATC.

When Proteus suddenly becomes more interested in sitting on his throne, I bet you a JanusCoin that it's because Varix sent him running.

This wasn't nearly as complicated as the High Court to explain, but for reference:

Hmph, accusations that VarixArchebelloch is some kind of de facto ruler is mere jealousy. Perhaps our historical struggles with poverty make it hard to believe that one family could come so far. People reach out for excuses and villains.
