Apparently some Mer nobility provided maps of selkie migration patterns to a contingent of knights motivated by the species-hate of petty lords (no implication of higher lords in this event has surfaced and evidence may now be lost to time). These TyrantKnights struck the great beaching that was so appalling to them, and pursued the selkies in ships, with new vessels joining the fray at different points on a route the selkies thought was safe.
Had they not sailed into the Zarine during the NarwhalGallant whelping season, they may have exterminated the Selkie. Afterwards, knights involved were given up to the deep for justice. ThantarsZim?, of the Royal Order of the Cerulean Guard, was questioned by QueenMyriada about possible involvement, but not punished.

As part of the agreement of recompense for the Rending, the XerxinePeninsula was ceded to the DeepCourt. A bit of a fish-out-of-water domain, but the Mer have taken over its administration, and the Selkie bask in numbers upon the shingles and strands. It is a curiosity to see them in glass-walled carts and carry-tanks as they go about their business.
The Harmony Pilgrims have been pleased that there has been no interruption in the PilgrimageOfTheChords since the cession, and the local Chord Shrine has in fact been improved and beautified.

However, we will never forget the Rending. It was before my time but even so the sight of a Tyrant helm sets me on edge.
