Front Page GallantIvory

The preferred vessel for BlackOctopusRum. While the other ingredients for the spirit are native to the CuttlefishBay region, DeritriaEleven must travel to the Zarine, a deep region home to numerous Selkie settlements and close to the cold end of the JellicalCoast. There, away from the dangerous reefs, the massive NarwhalsGallant? swim and sing unchallenged, dwarfing even other large species like the WhaleAzure.

Or, more honestly, the Shark went there once, and was in the right place at the right time when a single Narwhal Gallant suffered a near fatal blow from a some other colossal beast, the likes of which she'd never seen before. The beast's horn took a very long time to saw into pieces small enough to transport, but Deritria put all her crew to the task. The supply of ivory dwindles though, so she'll be forced to go back to the Zarine if she wishes to procure more of it.

It doesn't affect the taste of the rum of course, although some like to say they prefer the feel of it against their mouth (or whatever orifice). Certainly a case of successful branding becoming somewhat of a burden.

Commentary, footnotes, disputes, refutations, addenda:

The ivory's a bit of a sacred relic where I come from. One would think, then, that BlackOctopusRum would then be terribly blasphemous to a pious Selkie. However, this is certainly not the case, in fact many of my kind think of the good old Rum as holy thanks to its container.

"An Ode to BlackOctopusRum

The quality of the drink stands not on the shoulders of the glass"

Just the opening line, Sir. I could recite the whole 27 stanzas, but my mouth is rather dry. Why thank you, yes. I don't mind if I do.

While your servant fetches the wine, some background. The famous rum is served in GallantIvory cups, each decorated with an intricate carving of death. Supposedly the rum eats away at the interior of the cup. Should you be holding a cup when it breaks, then you are doomed to suffer the death depicted.

Utter balderdash, of course, but best to drink swiftly!

I think the superstitious stories about GallantIvory and BlackOctopusRum are just to discourage sipping. Ele ignored the warnings and her teeth were stained for days, she was quite frustrated.

Now, I have heard an amazing story about Myriapodia divers in the Zarine finding the ivory of naturally deceased NarwhalGallant, but that is an unsafe depth of sea indeed.

I remember being very amused to see novices in the DeepCourt taking off the lids from their GallantIvory cups of BlackOctopusRum and lifting them to their lips.

Their heads vanished in clouds of ink, and instead of imbibing their liquor, they inhaled it.

Very, very amusing.
